Functional Training

In a nutshell, we train functionally for strength that transfers from your workouts to activities of life, work or sport. It is purposeful training which uses movements basic to your specific daily routine, job or recreational activities. What is functional to one person may not be functional to another.

Generally speaking, how many movements or activities in your day are performed by one joint acting in isolation? Likely very few, if any. In Functional Training we train movements, not isolated muscles, and in doing so improve performance and balance while subjecting the body to less wear and tear.

In order to get you Fit to Function, we will use traditional and nontraditional exercises in varying positions, multiple planes and alternate patterns of movement. We progress through a continuum of exercises that teach us to handle our own body weight in all planes of movement. We learn to better handle our body weight by improving balance, proprioception (body awareness) and the ability to maintain or regain stability during movement.

The best programs incorporate many methods of training and different types of equipment—not variety for variety's sake, but systematic progressions of movements tailored to your specified outcome. Following the SAID principle—the body's ability to make Specific Adaptations to Imposed Demands—we train the body to effectively utilize the neurological and structural changes produced by exercise to generate smooth, coordinated and integrated movement patterns. With training, all structures in the body adapt and become more efficient in movement, resist fatigue, and learn good form throughout an activity to avoid fatigue-related injury.
